Mercy Ships

Maximising long term sustainable impacts of free surgery and healthcare

For over 40 years, Mercy Ships has deployed hospital ships to some of the poorest countries in the world, providing vital, free surgery and healthcare to people in desperate need. In 2019, it was awarded a GBP 2 million UK Aid Match grant from the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) for its work in Senegal. 3B Impact worked with Mercy Ships to maximise its long-term sustainable impact. We did this by:

  • Assessing Mercy Ship’s value for money and the sustainability of its impact after the hospital ship leaves a country.
  • Assessing the impact of both Mercy Ship’s surgeries and its capacity building programmes with a view to helping Mercy Ships maximise and communicate its wider impacts.
  • Collaborating with local research partners to assess the economic and structural context of surgical delivery in Senegal and how Mercy Ships can contribute to health systems strengthening in Senegal and beyond. Due to the postponement of the Mercy Ships mission during the Covid-19 crisis, our work will be able to inform its mission in Senegal when it is able to recommence.
